Created as a result of mother nature’s sense of humor no doubt, there are some pretty odd places around the GTA, but not many are stranger than this one. So if you follow all of the instructions when assembling your Lego, wear sunscreen with a higher SPF than your school average, or drive 5 under the speed limit, these places just might be out of your comfort zone. But hey, that is where the magic happens! So if you’ve got even the slightest sense of curiosity and a couple hours of free time you should most definitely check out the unique and quirky Cheltenham Badlands.
Ever dreamt of going to Mars? Make sure that you check out the badlands before-hand to prepare yourself. A younger relative of some of the immense Badland National Park in the United States, these rolling red hills with white stripes are a result of Queenston Shale, a soft rock that is easily eroded and consequently has been molded into this hypnotizing landscape. Created back in the 1900’s when this area was cleared for farming, the Cheltenham badlands are some of the only exposed rock of the type in Ontario. This natural maze will surely be one of the most unique things you've seen in a while, and is the perfect place to go for a walk to clear your head, or bring your dog for an adventure. Although most people stay within the barren part of the park, if you wander within the trees you'll find that the Queenston spreads far further than most think. The sparse trees turn to dense forest, yet the ground remains this choky red rock. So walk into the foliage for around 10 minutes and you'll find a stretch of paths that very few people who visit this site ever see.
However, being so easily malleable, tourism is an immense threat to this conservation area, and local authorities are taking measure to ensure the responsible conservation of this natural wonder. So, this is no time for procrastination... View Map
